Lorsque le projet du Tramway s'est imposé en 2004, très vite le chantier du tramway apparaît comme l’occasion unique d’accompagner la recomposition du paysage urbain par des oeuvres d’art.
Ainsi 218 artistes du monde entier ont présenté un projet original ; 15 ont été retenu par un comité d'experts dirigé par François Barré, Président du Centre Georges Pompidou de 1993 à 1996 et directeur de l’architecture et du patrimoine au Ministère de la culture de 1996 à 2000.
Parmi les critères de sélection des principes directeurs forts ont été dégagés :
- un niveau international,
- la présence d’artistes de Nice et de la Côte d’azur,
- une volonté de retenir des oeuvres accessibles au plus grand nombre.
- concevoir des oeuvres pour une présence artistique dans la ville de jour comme de nuit,
- réaffirmer l’importance des lieux emblématiques que sont la Place Masséna, coeur de la cité, le Square Toja, entrée de la Place Garibaldi et la Porte Fausse, lien entre l’ancienne et la nouvelle ville,
- poursuivre le mouvement de modernité dans le paysage urbain niçois, mouvement initié par le tramway et les aménagements des espaces publics.
When the project of the Tramway (Streetcar) was initiated in 2004, the construction site of the Tramway appears as the unique occasion to reorganize the townscape by works of art. 218 artists of the world presented an original project; 15 were held by experts' committee directed by François Barré, President of the Georges Pompidou Center from 1993 till 1996 and director of the architecture and the heritage to the Ministry of culture.
Main selection guiding principles were listed :
- international artists,
- artists' presence of Nice and Côte d'Azur,
- a will to hold accessible works to most large number.
It was necessary for it to:
- Conceive works for an artistic presence in the city in the daytime and at night
- Define again the importance places as Masséna Square, the heart of the city, the Public garden Toja, the Place Garibaldi entrance and the False Door, the link between the old and the new city,
- continue the movement of modernity in Nice, the movement introduced by the streetcar and the developments of the public spaces.
